100 ducat of Sigismund III Vasa, struck in the Bydgoszcz Royal Mint, is the first Polish coin which was sold for over a million dollars (in 2008). It became the most expensive Polish coin in history.


The Bydgoszcz Canal is the oldest, still functioning, inland water canal in Poland. The canal was built in 1773-1774.


The Woodworking Machines Factory in Bydgoszcz (located in Nakielska Street) is the oldest company in Poland manufacturing machines and devices for woodworking and wood processing. The factory has been functioning since 1865.


It was in the Bydgoszcz Royal Mint, which once occupied the eastern part of the Mill Island, where in 1621 the biggest ever gold coins in the history of Europe were produced. The famous 100 ducat of Sigismund III Vasa was 7 centimeters in diameter!

The oldest church and the oldest building in Bydgoszcz is St Martin and Nicolaus Cathedral. The cathedral was erected in 1466 – 1502. However, some sections of the northern wall are much older.

 

 

The brick railway bridge located close to the main railway station is one of the oldest bridges in Poland. It was erected in 1851.

 


Bydgoszcz was one of the biggest producers of bikes in the inter-war Poland.

 


The present Rudolf Modrzejewski Bridge in Fordon on completion in 1893 was the longest bridge in ... Germany.

 


Saint Vincent de Paul's Basilica, one of the biggest churches in Poland, was modelled after the Pantheon in Rome.

 


Saint Andrew Bobola's Church on Kościeleckich Square is the tallest building in Bydgoszcz. The tower of the church is 75 metres high, which means it is 10 metres higher than the dome of the Basilica.

 


Lyrics to a popular "Forbiden song - Siekiera, motyka" (Axe, hoe) were written by Anna Jachnina who after the WW II lived in Bydgoszcz where she worked as a repoter for the Regional Branch of the Polish Radio. It was her initiative to create Cepelia in Bydgoszcz where local artists were able to sell their work.

On 6-7 of June, 1921, Marshal Józef Piłsudski resided in Bydgoszcz. He stayed in a tenement house on Gdańska street where now one may find a memorial plate reminding his visit (below).
