Hieronim Konieczka, an actor and theatre director, was born on the 29th of March 1920 in Bydgoszcz. He started his artistic education at Bydgoszcz Drama School which was successfully completed at State Higher Drama School in Łódź. His exceptional talent was noted from the very beginning of his career. He spent 16 years in Bydgoszcz, from 1945 to 1961, playing in Polish Theatre. His interpretations in plays adapted from Schiller’s, Becket’s and Witkacy’s works won the acclaim of the local audiences.

After 16 years of playing on Bydgoszcz Polish Theatre stage, Hieronim Konieczka moved to Poznań. A  year later he directed plays in Bałtycki Dramatic Theatre in Koszalin. He also worked in Dramatic Theatre in Szczecin for six years and in Horzyca Theatre in Toruń for seven years, till 1976.

In the year 1976, Hieronim Konieczka returned to his home town where he passionately animated cultural life. Beside his intensive work in the theatre, he also initiated numerous events in Foreign Books and Press Club.  In recognition of  his artistic achievements he was granted numerous prizes yet the Golden Mask, which was awarded him twice, is regarded as the most precious one.

Hieronim Konieczka played on the stage for the last time in 1992. Two years later, on the 27th of December 1994, one of the most outstanding Polish actors passed away. In the year 2000, in appreciation of his artistic achievements, Polish Theatre in Bydgoszcz, not without reason, was named after him. Indeed, he was not only an excellent actor and theatre director but also an artist passionately initiating and animating artistic events in our city.
