Jan Biziel, a medical doctor, thriving for freedom, with strong sense of social duty and social concern, was born on the 12th of October 1858 in Osieczna. He studied medicine at German universities in Lipsk and Gryffi. Afterwards he had an opportunity to acquire practical knowledge in medicine under famous Polish Jagiellonian University professor Ludwik Rydygier.
Moving to Bydgoszcz Jan Biziel moved to Bydgoszcz in 1906. Devoted to medical practice, he was also engaged in independence conspiracy. In 1918, he became a delegate of Citizens’ Committee and then a Chairman of Polish People’s Council in Bydgoszcz City. During Greater Poland Uprising, he secretly treated and operated wounded insurgents. He also falsified Prussian army deserters’ documents risking repressions. Freedom regained – witness of events In 1920 Bydgoszcz was again in the boundaries of free Polish state constituted again after more than centennial partition. Jan Biziel, who lived at that time at 3 Cieszkowskiego Street, was one of the witnesses of the events from the 19th of January 1920 when Polish authorities took power in Bydgoszcz. The next day he greeted Polish soldiers entering the city. Social concern As only Poland regained independence, he devoted his time to restore Polish administration and economy. He was engaged in various organizations like Craftsmen’s Society and Industry Society just to mention the two. He also contributed to cultural life by organizing and opening Bydgoszcz Bookshop. He supported Polish efforts to regain Gdańsk Pomerania. In the period between World War I and World War II, he held the post of the City Council Chairman. An example to follow In the recognition of his outstanding achievements in the cause of Poland, Pomerania and Bydgoszcz he achieved numerous awards –the most prestigious was the Order of Rebirth of Poland- Officer's Cross. Doctor Biziel was also awarded a title of Honorary Bydgoszcz Citizen in recognition of his merits .He died on the 4th of February 1934. In 1990, Bydgoszcz awarded him again. University Hospital nr 2 is named after Doctor Jan Biziel. |
