Kocerka Teodor
Famous residents

Teodor Kocerka, an Olympic Games medallist and a legend of Polish rowing, was born on the 6th of August 1927 in Bydgoszcz. He started his career in Bydgoszcz Rowing Society in 1945. As he completed his secondary education at the School of Commerce in his hometown, he moved to Warsaw to continue his studies.

A career that spanned Bydgoszcz and Warsaw

In 1952, Teodor Kocerka graduated from the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. Still being a student, he won his first medal at the Championships of Poland in 1948. A promising young rower frequently changed colours to represent clubs of Bydgoszcz, Torun, Szczecin, and Warsaw.  Yet the places that were particularly important in his life were his hometown Bydgoszcz and Warsaw, the capital of Poland.

Successes at Olympic Games

Teodor Kocerka won bronze Olympic medals first in Helsinki in 1952 and then in Rome in 1960. Afterwards, in 1956 at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, he lost by a small margin and ultimately gained the fourth position.  He was one of the top world‘s rowers during his whole career. In recognition of his merits, he was honoured twice by being selected to carry the Polish flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Dozens of medals

Medals won in prestigious competitions are in such abundance that probably Teodor Kocerka himself could have not been able to name them all. Yet there are some medals worth mentioning like those won at Europe Championships: a gold one in 1955, silver ones in 1952 and 1954 as well as bronze ones in 1956 and 1959. In the year 1955 and 1956, Teodor Kocerka won the Diamond Challenge Sculls of the Henley Royal Regatta.  He was also the World University Champion in Budapest in 1949 and a medal winner at four other University World Championships. He had no equals among Polish rowers. The rank is measured in terms of titles – he was the Champion of Poland nineteen times!

Excellent at rowing, excellent at coaching

The best Polish rower ever, as it was proved in a poll taken in 80th anniversary of Polish Union of Rowing Societies in 1999, turned out to be an excellent coach.
He trained many rowing crews. For six years, he coached Bydgoszcz teams, namely, University Sports Association team and Bydgoszcz Rowing Society team. Between 1961 and 1967 he was a rowing coach of both women’s and men’s national representations. Again, he was a rowing coach of women’s national representation between 1974 and 1976.
