Jerzy Adamski, nicknamed ‘Jopek’, the champion of Europe and Olympic Vice-champion in boxing, holding the greatest amount of awards in the history of sport in Bydgoszcz, was born on the 14th of March 1937 in Sierpc, in Warsaw Region. Bydgoszcz coaches contributed greatly to his most significant successes.
Trainings in Bydgoszcz clubs Though Jerzy Adamski started his career in Piła, yet in 1955, he already represented Bydgoszcz ‘Brda’ club. Later, in 1959, he was a boxer in the colours of ‘Start’ club and after that of ‘Astoria’ club for the next five years, between 1959 and 1964. In 1965, he returned to ‘Brda’ and remained there until 1970. He belonged to the generation of Feliks Stamm’s ‘children’- Polish boxers trained by Feliks Stamm who was one of the greatest boxing trainers in the history of sport. National and international successes Jerzy Adamski was the Champion of Poland six times. For the first time he won the award in 1956 in bantamweight. Later, between 1959 and 1962 and then in 1964 he won the champion titles in featherweight. Jerzy Adamski represented Poland in international contests scoring fifteen victories, one draw, and only three defeats. He became a Europe Champion in 1959 in Lucerne. Later in 1963 in Moscow, he was the third. Yet the most precious medal is the silver Olympic one. In 1960, at Olympic Games in Rome, our boxer quite effortlessly reached the final. Yet the fighter from Italy defeated him in the last bout. In his long-standing career, Jerzy Adamski struggled 270 times, scoring 237 victories, 10 draws, and 23 defeats. In recognition of his achievements in sport, he was awarded Commander’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order. Jerzy Adamski died in Bydgsozcz on the 6th of December 2002. He was buried at the cemetery belonging to the parish dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Our Lord, Jesus at Ludwikowo Street in Bydgoszcz. |
