How can you prepare your family for emergencies? This Saturday: National Family Training—in Bydgoszcz and over 30 locations across the province

How should you act in an emergency, ensure your children’s safety, and prepare your family for crises? You can learn all about this on Saturday, October 17, during the National Family Training as part of the OLiOC Academy.

Events will take place throughout Poland. Over 30 will be held in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Province. The main event in our region is scheduled to take place at Władysław Jagiełło Elementary School No. 9, located at 2 Gen. Tadeusz Bora-Komorowski Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– I invite all residents to participate. I’ll be there throughout the training, ready to talk and answer any questions about safety. Among other things, visitors will be able to tour the shelter located beneath the school. It is a model facility of its kind. In our province, we are working on preparing additional sites like this one.

- says Michał Sztybel, Governor of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The National Family Training is designed to help participants better prepare for crisis situations and develop guidelines for working together. During the event, children and adults will learn the most important safety procedures and practice how to respond to various emergency situations. Five themed stations have been set up, where practical tasks await participants.

Station 1 – “Signals and Announcements”

Participants will learn how to respond to alerts and warning announcements. An important part of the training will be preparing to act after receiving a Level 1 or Level 2 alert: determining the whereabouts of immediate family members, checking the location of the nearest shelter, and agreeing on a joint action plan.

Module 2 – “Safe Place”

Tasks will include, among other things, drawing a floor plan of a house, apartment, or floor of a building and marking the places where you can take shelter after hearing an alarm. The exercise will help families determine where to go in case of an emergency.

Module 3 – “School Procedure in Case of an Alarm”

This section covers the rules for behavior at school after an alarm is sounded. Participants will learn how to respond to an alarm signal, the locations to which children will be escorted, and the rules for communicating with parents.

Resource 4 – “Family Plan”

Families will develop their own action plan in case of a crisis. The exercises will include scenarios in which cell phones do not work, are dead, have no signal, or are difficult to use, and returning home is not possible.

Module 5 – “Concerning Behaviors”

Participants, trained by the police, will learn how to respond to potential threats, how to contact emergency services, and what actions to take in the event of immediate danger. They will learn procedures that can help them assess a situation and respond appropriately.

- We’ll discuss not only real-world threats but also cyber threats. Recent events have shown how important it is to educate parents about children’s online safety. We want to offer guidance on how to talk to children about these threats and how to help them avoid them. This component was planned from the start, but we decided to expand it. We want parents to better understand the virtual world in which their children live today

- emphasizes Ireneusz Nitkiewicz, Deputy Director of the Department of Security and Crisis Management at the Provincial Police Headquarters.

Activities as part of the National Family Training program at Elementary School No. 9 in Bydgoszcz will be led by, among others, the Fordon Volunteer Fire Department.

- During the training, we will demonstrate and explain how to respond in various crisis situations. What should you do if you can’t get home? How should we proceed if, for example, Dad is in one part of the city, Mom is in another, and the children are at different schools? The training is primarily designed to provide participants with practical skills. Using prepared worksheets, we’ll work with families to outline an action plan in case of a crisis. We want participants to be able to take it home with them afterward, fill in the details, and memorize the most important points. Thanks to this, every family member will know how to act in a difficult situation, and parents will gain greater peace of mind and confidence that their children are safe.

—“emphasizes Arkadiusz Słowiński, commander of the Bydgoszcz-Fordon Volunteer Fire Department.

The new OLiOC logistics base and the future of the Fordon Volunteer Fire Department

An important element of efforts to ensure residents’ safety will also be the planned investment in Bydgoszcz’s Fordon district. The provincial governor has already allocated 1 million PLN in the OLiOC budget for the construction of an OLiOC warehouse—a specialized facility that will also serve as the Fordon Volunteer Fire Department’s fire station. The project is intended to strengthen flood protection in Bydgoszcz, which is why it has been planned in the Vistula River area.

- We want to grow as an organization and operate as effectively as possible in the largest city of our region and within the metropolitan area. Having our own headquarters will allow us to carry out our assigned tasks even more effectively, expand our activities for the benefit of residents, and ensure the city’s safety. As a Volunteer Fire Department, we will be able to work in decent conditions and properly store our equipment.

— adds the commander of the Bydgoszcz-Fordon Volunteer Fire Department.

The investment in Fordon is in line with the objectives of the Civil Protection and Civil Defense Program (OLiOC) for 2027–2031, adopted by the government. It allocates over 102 billion PLN for measures aimed at increasing citizens’ safety, including the development of civil protection infrastructure, support for local governments, and the preparation of emergency response services.

A significant part of the Program for the coming years consists of funds allocated to equipping and preparing Volunteer Fire Departments to carry out civil protection and civil defense tasks. These funds are intended to support the development of four operational profiles within the Volunteer Fire Departments: logistics, evacuation, medical, and humanitarian.
