In Bydgost’s Stronghold: Secrets of Early Medieval Life in and around Bydgoszcz
Bydgoszcz is currently one of Poland's largest cities, covering a vast area along the riverbanks. However, its story began on a small, sandy island—which no longer exists today—formed by the lazily meandering Brda River. It was here, in the 1030s during the reign of King Casimir the Restorer, that a fortified stronghold was built. The settlement came to be known as Bydgoszcz, a name most likely derived from an old Slavic personal name, Bydgost.
About the Exhibition
The exhibition "In Bydgost’s Stronghold: Secrets of Medieval Life in and around Bydgoszcz" showcases the material culture, daily life, and spiritual world of the region's early medieval inhabitants. It weaves local history into the broader story of the origins of the Polish state.
On display, you will find a fascinating variety of authentic tools, ornaments, weapons, and everyday objects. Together, they highlight the contrast between the bustling daily routines inside the stronghold and the distinct lifestyle in the surrounding settlement (podgrodzie). The exhibition spans the entire medieval period, showcasing artifacts dating from the 7th century up to the mid-14th century.
The exhibits come from the museum's own collection—gathered through decades of archaeological excavations and field interventions in the region—as well as from the collections of the Institute of Archaeology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the Regional Heritage Monuments Protection Office.
With an engaging visual layout, numerous historical reconstructions, and interactive displays that encourage active participation, this exhibition truly brings the atmosphere of the distant past back to life.
All artifacts, copies, and models on display are courtesy of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz, the Institute of Archaeology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and the Regional Heritage Monuments Protection Office (Bydgoszcz Branch).
