Cultural, active, cosy. Winter in Bydgoszcz

Shorter days, chilly mornings and the anticipation of the first snow are a sign that it’s time to look for ideas on how to spend your time this winter. And there’s no shortage of them in our city!

What is there to do in Bydgoszcz when the temperature drops and everything outside turns white? We’ve put together a list of suggestions for those who enjoy exploring the city, are on the lookout for interesting events, want to spend their time actively, or simply fancy a good cup of coffee in a cosy spot. Whether you’re a local or planning a winter visit to Bydgoszcz – check out what’s happening in the city this winter.

Myślęcinek – the Winter Wonderland

The first snow is the perfect excuse to head to Myślęcinek! The Forest Park of Culture and Recreation takes on a whole new character in winter – white paths, a wintry landscape and plenty of opportunities for active leisure make this a place well worth visiting any time of year. Whether it’s for a walk, some winter fun or a family day out – Myślęcinek has everything you need to make the most of the cold days.

Skis, sledges and snowboards – winter fun for everyone: Myślęcinek has been attracting enthusiasts of outdoor activities for years. Children use the picturesque hills for tobogganing, whilst winter sports fans head for the floodlit ski slope with artificial snow. This is great news for those who don’t want to travel to the mountains to experience the winter adrenaline rush, as well as for those taking their first steps in learning to ski or snowboard.  Myślęcinek has everything you need for a great time. Don’t have any equipment? No problem! You can rent it on site, as well as book lessons with an instructor. You can check the conditions on the slope on the Forest Culture and Recreation Park website.

For those who’d rather take it slow and enjoy a more relaxed ride, a sleigh ride followed by a bonfire is a lovely option, organised every year by the Equestrian Recreation Centre in Myślęcinek.

A stroll amidst a thousand lights: in autumn and winter, Myślęcinek takes on a whole new look. After dark the magical Lumina Park comes to life – a mystical world of light that draws residents of Bydgoszcz and visitors alike year after year.

A winter stroll among thousands of lights feels like stepping into a fairy tale, with colourful installations and unexpected scenes lighting up the path. Each year brings a new theme and fresh attractions. This season, Lumina Park takes visitors on a Journey Around the World, with enchanting scenes inspired by picturesque Budapest, wild Australia and frosty Greenland.

It’s a lovely way to spend a winter evening, whether you’re visiting with family and friends or simply looking for something a little different. This year’s edition runs from 30 October to 28 February.

A winter visit to the zoo: During the colder months, let’s not forget about the residents of the Bydgoszcz Zoo. Lynxes, wolves and European bison are particularly impressive at this time of year, while other animals can be spotted in their heated enclosures through large viewing windows. Every winter, the zoo organises special winter - themed activities, often accompanied by a warming bonfire – especially during the winter school holidays. It’s a lovely way to spend a cold day outdoors and discover a different side of the animal world.

The Bydgoszcz Christmas Market is the only Christmas market in Poland held on a bridge – and the festive atmosphere extends well beyond it.

The scent of mulled wine, the aroma of local delicacies, handmade gifts and thousands of twinkling lights – this is Bydgoszcz at its most festive. Every year, the Christmas Market draws locals and visitors alike, turning the city centre into a lively winter wonderland. Festive stalls fill some of the city’s most picturesque spots, including the Old Town Bridge, Theatre Square, Mostowa Street and the Old Market Square. Together, they create a festive trail that invites visitors to wander, explore and soak up the atmosphere.

There’s something for everyone at the Bydgoszcz Christmas Market. Festive music, sparkling illuminations, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree and plenty of food stalls and unique gifts make it a wonderful place to spend a winter afternoon or evening. Whether you’re visiting with family, meeting friends or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll, the market is full of little moments that make the festive season special.

This year’s event will run from 20 November to 21 December, giving you a whole month to immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas.

However, Christmas in Bydgoszcz is about much more than the Christmas Market. If you’d rather escape the festive hustle and bustle and enjoy a quieter winter stroll, the city has plenty of atmospheric corners waiting to be discovered. After dark, in particular, Bydgoszcz takes on a special kind of magic, with twinkling lights, charming streets and hidden nooks that are well worth exploring away from the main routes.

Długa Street is especially enchanting, with light displays inspired by Bydgoszcz’s iconic Granaries on the Brda. The Old Market Square is also a great starting point for a wander through the surrounding streets, many of which are beautifully decorated for Christmas. Take a stroll along Batorego or Magdzińskiego Street, or head towards Śródmieście, following Gdańska or Dworcowa Street to the Music District and the charming Sielanka neighbourhood.

Mill Island is another lovely place to slow down and soak up the winter atmosphere. Its picturesque riverside setting looks particularly beautiful after dark, when the lights shimmer on the water. And if you fancy warming up along the way, the area around the Rother Mills and the bridge over the Młynówka offers cosy cafés and restaurants serving up something delicious to enjoy on a chilly day.

Lace up and enjoy the ice

One of the favourite winter activities in Bydgoszcz is ice skating. And when it comes to skating, Torbyd is the place to go. Located by the River Brda, this modern ice rink opened in 2018 and can welcome up to 250 skaters at a time. There’s more to Torbyd than skating, too. Throughout the winter, it hosts a variety of events, from workshops and skating picnics to exciting ice hockey matches. Check the ‘What’s on’ section of our website to see what’s coming up.

If you're in Fordon, there’s another fantastic place to enjoy a skate. Every winter, the seasonal ice rink next to Primary School No. 65, at 7 Tomasz Gollob Street, welcomes skaters of all ages. It’s a great spot for a relaxed afternoon on the ice, whether you’re skating with the kids, meeting friends or just getting some fresh air. Skate hire and professional skate servicing are available on site, so you can simply turn up and enjoy your time on the ice.

When winter arrives and temperatures drop, keep an eye out for news of other ice rinks opening around the city. A few hours of skating is a great way to get some exercise, spend time outdoors and enjoy the winter season — especially when Bydgoszcz finally gets a proper taste of winter weather.

Cold Outside, Culture Inside

Winter is a great time to explore the cultural side of Bydgoszcz. There’s plenty to choose from, whether you fancy a visit to a museum or gallery, a film at the cinema, or an evening at the theatre, Opera Nova or the Pomeranian Philharmonic. Cultural venues stay busy throughout the winter, with exhibitions, concerts, performances and events for all ages.

A good place to start is the Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum. Head to the Granaries by the Brda River and take a look at the permanent exhibition, From the Old Market Square to Freedom Square. A Walk Through the Streets of Interwar Bydgoszcz. It offers a glimpse into what the city looked like back then, introducing visitors to its streets, people and everyday life. It’s a lovely way to discover a little more about Bydgoszcz’s past while exploring one of its best-known museums.

There’s more to discover on Mill Island, where several museums are well worth a visit. At the Leon Wyczółkowski House, you can learn more about the life and work of one of the artists most closely associated with Bydgoszcz. His paintings and personal memorabilia offer a glimpse into his world and artistic journey.

At the European Money Centre, you’ll find the famous Bydgoszcz Treasure and discover the history of the mint and money. If ancient history is more your thing, head to the Archaeological Collections, housed in the oldest surviving Grannary on Mill Island.

You’ll find more exhibitions at the museum’s Main Building at 4 Gdańska Street. Here, you can explore the permanent exhibition Images of Un-/reality, along with a display in the former refectory. With so much to see, it’s easy to spend a good part of the day discovering Bydgoszcz’s history and art.

Winter in Tune

Fans of classical music will find plenty to enjoy at the Pomeranian Philharmonic this season. One of the highlights in December is the Opera, operetta and musical Gala, featuring arias, duets and music by composers such as Verdi, Donizetti, Puccini, Strauss, Lehár and Kálmán. There’s something for the youngest music fans, too. The December concert in the From Mummy’s Tummy to Baby’s Ears series is a lovely option for families with little ones, and the series continues in January and February 2027.

With the Philharmonic Hall undergoing renovation and extension this year, concerts will be held at various venues across the city. It’s a good opportunity to discover some new places and enjoy music in a different setting. One of them is the new Music Academy building, an impressive modern space where striking architecture meets the latest musical technologies.

Winter is also a good excuse to plan a special evening at Opera Nova. In early December, The Nutcracker brings one of the best-loved festive ballets to the stage. The programme continues with Winter Journey, an intimate performance combining Schubert’s music with texts by Stanisław Barańczak, followed by Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor to round off the month.

The festive season wouldn’t be complete without Opera Nova’s New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Concerts. For the 2026/2027 season, eight concerts are planned between 29 December and 3 January, giving you plenty of chances to welcome the New Year with music. And there’s more to look forward to in the months ahead, with well-known works such as Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, Moniuszko’s Halka and Strauss’s Die Fledermaus (The Bat) among the upcoming productions. Towards the end of winter, Puccini’s La Bohème will also take to the stage. You can find the full programme on the Opera Nova website.

A winter evening and a good film make a great combination. Alongside the popular multiplexes — Multikino, Cinema City and Helios — Bydgoszcz has a few smaller cinemas with plenty of character. One of them is Kino Orzeł Studio Cinema, with its history stretching back to the early 20th century. Originally known as the silent cinema Oko, it was established in 1929 and is located at 12 Marcinkowskiego Street. Today, it screens films by local filmmakers as well as a wide selection of Polish, European and international productions.

If you enjoy arthouse cinema, Kino Jeremi in Fordon is another place worth checking out. Located at 13 Generała Augusta Fieldorfa ‘Nila’ Street, it offers films you won’t often find on the screens of larger cinemas.

And if you fancy something beyond a film, there’s Adria Musical Theatre. This lively venue brings together cinema, theatre and entertainment, with a programme that includes concerts, performances for adults and children, and cabaret shows. It’s a good choice if you like to mix a film night with a bit of live entertainment.

Whether you spend the afternoon exploring a museum, visit an exhibition or head out for a concert, a play or a film, winter is a great time to discover Bydgoszcz’s cultural side. And when it’s cold and snowy outside, there’s all the more reason to find something enjoyable to do indoors.

Cold Days, Warming Flavours

As you wander through Bydgoszcz’s prettiest streets, take a break from the winter chill and step into one of the city’s cosy cafés, restaurants or tea rooms. Seasonal menus and hearty dishes offer a welcome taste of comfort, while fragrant teas, freshly brewed coffee and sweet treats make the perfect excuse to linger a little longer. For an extra touch of indulgence, a cup of rich, velvety hot chocolate is hard to beat on a grey winter’s day. And when evening falls, follow the sound of live music and settle in for a different side of the city. After all, some of the best travel moments happen when you slow down, savour good food and drink, and let yourself get caught up in the atmosphere of the place. In winter, Bydgoszcz is just as much about these little pleasures as it is about the sights themselves.
