As part of the Old Film Festival in Bydgoszcz, we invite you to a special event with Wojciech Smarzowski—one of the most important contemporary Polish directors, screenwriters, and cinematographers. The event’s program also includes a screening of the Television Theater production “Kuracja,” directed by Smarzowski, whose screenplay is based on a novel by Jacek Głębski.

“Kuracja” tells the story of Andrzej Majer (Bartłomiej Topa), a young and ambitious psychiatrist who decides to undertake an extraordinary experiment—he voluntarily becomes a patient at a psychiatric hospital for three months. In this way, he hopes to better understand his patients, their perception of the world, and the realities of a psychiatrist’s work. He informs only his supervisor, Prof. Walas, and the head of the ward, Prof. Zimiński (Jerzy Łapiński), of his plan, and they warn him of the consequences of the experiment.

Majer, posing as a young engineer suffering from schizophrenia, is admitted to a ward where he meets, among others, Nowakowski (Lech Dyblik), who is in a catatonic state, and Kowalski (Arkadiusz Jakubik), who reacts aggressively to the arrival of the new patient. The protagonist keeps detailed notes and observes both the patients and the hospital’s operations. His experience becomes a starting point for questions about the boundary between mental health and illness, the ethical consequences of psychological experiments, and the nature of the doctor-patient relationship. “The Treatment” is a play that combines a medical perspective with philosophical and social reflection. Wojciech Smarzowski directs, and the cast includes, among others, Bartłomiej Topa, Jerzy Łapiński, Lech Dyblik, and Arkadiusz Jakubik. The play was awarded the Grand Prix at the “Dwa Teatry” Festival in 2002.

The event will provide an opportunity to speak with Wojciech Smarzowski about the beginnings of his career, his work on “The Cure,” television theater, and the path that led him to direct such major films as “The Wedding,” “The Dark House,” “Róża,” “Traffic Department,” “Under the Power of an Angel,” “Volhynia,” “The Clergy,” and “The Good House.”

We invite you to a meeting with a filmmaker whose work has long tackled difficult social, historical, and moral issues; it will also be an opportunity to discover the lesser-known theatrical side of his work.
