“Aria for an Athlete” is one of the most important films in Filip Bajon’s body of work and, at the same time, features an unforgettable performance by Krzysztof Majchrzak. During a special evening at the new campus of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, both artists will meet with the audience. The program includes a screening of the 1979 film and a mini jazz recital by Krzysztof Majchrzak.

The film tells the story of Władysław Góralewicz, a former world wrestling champion who decides to donate his extraordinary collection of trophies to the opera. During an interview, he reflects on his life, and as he recounts his story, we are transported back to the late 19th century. At that time, the young Góralewicz began performing in fairground booths and second-rate circuses. His exceptional strength, elegance in the ring, and erudition quickly set him apart from other competitors and launched him on his path to the top.

“Aria for an Athlete” was made in 1979, directed by Filip Bajon, with Krzysztof Majchrzak playing the lead role of the wrestler. A year later, the actor received the Zbyszek Cybulski Award for this performance. The event will therefore be an opportunity not only to rediscover one of the important works of Polish cinema, but also to learn about the history of its creation and to view the film from the perspective of its creators.

Filip Bajon, also known for such productions as “Wizja lokalna 1901,” “Limuzyna Daimler-Benz,” and “Magnat,” has long remained one of the leading figures in Polish cinema and theater. Krzysztof Majchrzak, in addition to his extensive acting career, is also a pianist and musician. His passion for music will round out the evening during a special mini jazz recital.
