This event is organized in collaboration with the Department of History at UKW.

The year 2026 marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Nowofarny Cemetery in Bydgoszcz. The area behind the brick gate on Artyleryjska Street has become a site of research for scholars and a group of students from the Department of History at UKW in Bydgoszcz. The results of their work have been compiled in the book “The Nowofarny Cemetery in Bydgoszcz: History, Memory, Heritage.”

The event will provide an opportunity to present the main themes of the publication, discuss the history of the cemetery, and meet the authors to ask them how they recall the time spent documenting the historic tombstones and tombs of the Nowofarny Cemetery.

The publication is part of the celebrations marking the 680th anniversary of Bydgoszcz being granted city rights, highlighting a cemetery that is important to the identity of Bydgoszcz’s residents.

If this book helps the Nowofarny Cemetery be seen not only as an active cemetery but also as an important part of Bydgoszcz’s heritage and collective memory, we will be able to consider one of the most important goals of our work to have been achieved. — the authors of the publication.

Authors of the book: Anetta Penczyńska-Głowacka, Monika Opioła-Cegiełka, Agnieszka Wysocka.
Research group: Jakub Kościński, Marta Kozłowska-Kałaczyńska, Dominik Kruber, Jakub Łyczek, Anna Różek, Mateusz Różek, Zuzanna Rybacka, Filip Semrau, Angelika Wegner, Wiktoria Wielgoszewska.
The event will be moderated by Ewa Dąbska-Wieczorkowska, a journalist and culture editor at Polish Radio’s regional station in Bydgoszcz, Radio PiK.

The book’s authors:
Dr. Anetta Głowacka-Penczyńska—specializes in social and economic history as well as the history of everyday life. Her research focuses on small towns and the lives of “ordinary” people within historical social structures.

Dr. Monika Opioła-Cegiełka—a historian and expert on Bydgoszcz—is the author of entries in the “Encyclopedia of Bydgoszcz” as well as articles on the history of Bydgoszcz in the 19th century and the interwar period.

Dr. Agnieszka Wysocka—an art historian. She researches architecture and cultural phenomena of the 19th and 20th centuries. She is the author and co-author of publications and historical-conservation studies concerning Bydgoszcz and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region.

Host:
Ewa Dąbska-Wieczorkowska—She has worked at Polish Radio PiK since 1992. Together with Eryk Hełminiak, Ania Trzcińska, and a few others, she emerged unscathed from a grueling all-day competition. At the time, she was working at a university and decided to embark on an adventure. As it turned out, her academic career had to give way to radio, which consumed her entirely.

Over the years, she spent brief stints at various newsrooms until she decided to become a “culture reporter.” She’s also passionate about feature reporting, though lately she hasn’t been able to devote as much time to it as she’d like. As an only child, she’s always been “hungry” for human connection. She loves to talk, but she’s just as eager to listen. Radio taught her this, opening the door to a world of wonderful artists.
