In 1827, Franz Schubert composed the song cycle *Winterreise* (German for “Winter Journey”) to the poetry of Wilhelm Müller. In 1994, Stanisław Barańczak published a volume of poems titled *Winter Journey to the Music of Franz Schubert*. These poems are not direct translations of the original texts, but rather a transposition of the titular and metaphorical “Journey” into the realities of the present day. The performance will feature poems from this very collection.

Performed by our artists, the show will be an emotionally engaging poetic journey for the audience—a moment frozen in time, so to speak—prompting reflection on the transience of life and the human condition in the 21st century; a performance that introduces the audience to the genre of the Romantic song and serves as an expression of the on-stage partnership between singer and pianist —a presentation of the close and intimate fusion of music and words, which is the foundation of both Franz Schubert’s work and Stanisław Barańczak’s poems.

The performers will be bass-baritone Janusz Żak and pianist Rozalia Kierc.

The loneliness of the main character—the Traveler—is depicted in a world of social isolation, soulless corporate culture, and emotional coldness. He is accompanied only by music in the form of the piano and the pianist—Białość—who takes part in the stage action, like a phantom of the Traveler’s relationships with other people, his inner world, and his memories.

For music lovers, the performance will be an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with a masterpiece of Romantic vocal poetry, and for us, the perfect moment to present Polish poetic works in the innovative form of a musical performance utilizing multimedia techniques.
