ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Piekielny Wąż is a musical project presenting unknown compositions by Johann Valentin Meder (1649–1719)—a court musician in Gdańsk and Riga, a pioneer of German opera, and one of the most important composers—alongside Dietrich Buxtehude—in the Baltic region at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Meder was a musical polyglot who fluently combined the national styles of all of Europe —Germany, France, Italy, and Poland—as well as the latest operatic and cantata forms with the legacy of 17th-century music; he was exceptionally attuned to timbre and instrumentation, as well as the musical emotions conveyed in the text. The program consists of premiere performances of works from the collections of libraries in Gdańsk and Uppsala.
