The horror film Polish cinema has been waiting for for decades

Krystyna wants to be called “Trina.” She’s almost 18 and dreams of breaking free from her family home in Kashubia. It’s the 1990s; the girl wants freedom, but all that awaits her at home are the nagging remarks of her mother, a downcast seamstress who only smiles at the TV—and mostly when John Paul II is on the screen. Her mother’s religious obsession becomes unbearable, and Krystyna plans an escape with a friend. Her plan falls apart when Krystyna’s mother’s younger sister arrives for a visit, accompanied by her paralyzed grandmother. Tension between the four women escalates, and grievances kept silent for years erupt into a scream. And Krystyna will discover something so terrifying about herself that it will shake her very existence.

“ÒPI” is the horror film Polish cinema has been waiting for for decades. Firmly rooted in Kashubian beliefs, it turns folk superstitions into a source of genuine terror. Almost the same kind of terror evoked by wall units and the 1990s chic that “ÒPI” exudes from the first scene to the last. On the one hand, this world seems familiar; on the other, it inspires fear. The film builds its atmosphere by gradually revealing the pieces of a terrifying puzzle. Folk rituals and local legends—so well-known, yet in this version strange and terrifying—make “ÒPI” a stylish but not over-stylized film, strangely close to the heart and original. Here, accusations uttered in hushed tones are just as terrifying as bloodied fingers and decapitation, and the finale will knock viewers with weaker nerves off their feet. And it will be worth it.

“ÒPI” is the feature-length debut of Marta Giec, who, together with Dominika Kłoczewiak, also wrote the excellent screenplay, thick with emotion and horror. Four women deliver magnificent performances in the film: Wiktoria Kruszczyńska, recently seen in the series “Piekło kobiet” , the multi-award-winning Gabriela Muskała, the surprising Magdalena Boczarska, and Iwona Bielska, who, with her role in “ÒPI,” brilliantly plays off what she did in the cult classic “Wilczyca.”
