A Successful Deception, The Martyrs, Rita, or My Wife Beats Me —these shocking names are the titles of Gaetano Donizetti’s operas, which in a way summarize the libretto of the comic opera masterpiece Don Pasquale, one of the most cheerful works to come from the pen of the master from Bergamo.

The libretto is …cruel: a lazy nephew lying in wait for his uncle’s inheritance, a cunning woman who doesn’t hesitate to use her charms to get her hands on the fortune and then torments her “husband” —even going so far as to slap him in the face—and a villain whom everyone trusts—yet he exploits everyone to achieve his goal (director Paweł Szkotak portrays him as a mafia boss at the end of the opera). And the title character: a good-natured old bachelor whose fortune makes him the target of schemers. The clash of these characters lends itself to the introduction of gags and props on stage that reference cult films.

Don Pasquale is, above all, a masterpiece of the bel canto era, so even the best directorial ideas cannot overshadow the vocal aspect. Gaetano Donizetti’s compositional genius has created wonderful music in which—alongside its frenetic pace—there are many lyrical moments.

Opera Nova invites you to four performances: from Thursday, November 5, through Sunday, November 8.

In the title role: Łukasz Jakubczak and Bartłomiej Kłos. As Norina Magdalena Czerwińska and Marta Ustyniak-Babińska; as the lyrical Ernesto will be played by guest artists Sylwester Mach and Michał Ryguła, and the cunning Malatesta will be portrayed by Damian Wilma and Janusz Żak, respectively.
