As we cross the Jerzy Sulima-Kamiński Bridge and walk down to the riverside boulevards, we can admire the Raftsman sculpture, which pays homage to the city’s river traditions. The Brda River has often been home to raftsmen who floated timber down its waters on rafts. In the past, such a sight was an everyday occurrence for the city’s residents. Today, we can reminisce about these beautiful traditions while strolling along the riverbank.

The statue is also meant to remind us of the cartographer and engineer Ferenc Flórián Csáky, who had a significant influence on the construction of the Bydgoszcz Canal. This engineer of Hungarian descent was one of the most distinguished engineers of King Stanisław August Poniatowski. Most of the surviving maps of the 18th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth are his work.

The monument was created by local artist Michał Kubiak. The sculpture was sponsored by the Hungarian Embassy with support from the city government, the marshal’s office, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
