The Neo-Gothic brick Church of the Savior—formerly the Church of Christ—was designed as early as 1894 by the renowned Berlin architect Heinrich Seeling (1852–1932). The design arrived in Bydgoszcz in February 1895. Construction began on March 25, 1896; the cornerstone was laid on May 19; and on October 27, Dr. Johannes Hesekiel consecrated the church. It was built on a cruciform plan, with a wide, spacious, two-bay nave, a slightly projecting transept, and a short chancel.

The church’s architecture is compact and understated, even austere, yet this allows it to blend seamlessly into its immediate surroundings. The structure is enlivened by a clock tower, originally crowned with a tall tent-shaped spire—which became a prominent feature of the square and the city skyline—as well as the simple, unassuming triangular gables of the chancel and transept. The tower’s spire and the church’s tall gable roof were originally covered with roof tiles. The red walls are occasionally broken up by brightly plastered blind windows. The main entrance leads through a two-part portal at the base of the tower, above which a colorful mosaic depicting Christ the Good Shepherd shines in a circular niche; two inconspicuous entrances in the side stair towers provided direct access to the galleries. Lighting is provided by large five-part windows in pointed-arch arcades, located at the height of the galleries. The small windows below the balconies have mostly been bricked up. The interior is covered by a suspended wooden barrel vault, supported by concrete arches. There are 434 seats on the lower level and 295 on the gallery level, which encircle the nave and transept.

The original, uniform, stylized interior furnishings have been preserved almost in their entirety—an altar in the form of a simple brick pointed-arch arcade with a metal cross, a brass baptismal font, a wooden pulpit, an organ, and long pews. The window above the altar features a colorful stained-glass panel with a central depiction of Christ, with God the Father and the dove of the Holy Spirit in the background, accompanied by the four evangelists with their symbols. The side windows are adorned with more understated glazing featuring geometric motifs. A noteworthy example of craftsmanship is the monumental chandelier, clearly reminiscent of the Romanesque “holy crowns” known from Aachen or Hildesheim, symbolizing the Heavenly Jerusalem.

The 25-stop organ, featuring a facade that is sparse in decorative detail—almost “constructivist” in style—and possessing a fine sound, was built in 1897 by the renowned organ builder Wilhelm Sauer of Frankfurt (Oder). In 1941, it was expanded by the Josef Goebel company of Gdańsk.

The walls, ceiling, the balustrades of the galleries, and the pulpit were adorned with modestly styled decoration featuring botanical and Oriental motifs, combining elements of the Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. The rood arch leading to the sanctuary was adorned with figurative decoration (heads of prophets and the dove of the Holy Spirit on the vault above the altar) and the choir loft next to the organ (images of angels). Having been repainted over the years, it now offers only a rough idea of its original appearance.

In accordance with the original plan, a spacious and picturesque green space was created around the church in 1901, designed by Konrad Neumann, director of the Municipal Gardens, to soften the austerity of the architecture and serve as a recreational space for local residents. By 1929, the park’s area had been 1.6 hectares; it was subsequently reduced to 0.65 hectares.
