The TeH2O Water, Industry, and Crafts Trail is a thematic industrial trail in Bydgoszcz that connects the history of fifteen sites embedded in the city’s landscape, all of which are organically linked to water. Each of the stories intertwines the lives of Bydgoszcz residents—artisans, entrepreneurs, and community activists—with the development of local industry and crafts. There’s no denying that the city’s greatest potential lies, as always, in its people. The TeH2O Trail in Bydgoszcz stands for T for technology, H for history, and O for two stories! The phenomenon of Bydgoszcz’s industrial heritage lies in the ability of science and technology to harness water as an element and to draw on its resources in many different ways. One can view the Bydgoszcz Canal—or water more broadly—as a transportation route, a source of energy, or a key component in the production process. The initiative to create the trail was launched in 2012 by Bydgoszcz as part of the international SHIFT–X project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (Central Europe Program). This is a European initiative aimed primarily at improving the management of industrial heritage and creating innovative industrial heritage products. The project was inspired by the Silesian Industrial Monuments Route, the Lusatian Energy Trail, and the Styrian Iron Trail. What sets the TeH2O Trail apart from other trails is its narrative. The sites along the trail serve as illustrations and backdrops for many intertwining stories about people and events from the heyday of industrial Bydgoszcz. The TeH2O Trail is an incentive to seek out information about the city, its history “straight from the factory,” and to explore the city’s secrets. The TeH2O Trail is the driving force behind immersing oneself in Bydgoszcz’s new “chemical compound.”
