In 2004, by decree of the Holy Father John Paul II, the Bydgoszcz Parish Church was elevated to the status of cathedral of the newly established Diocese of Bydgoszcz. However, for dozens of generations of Bydgoszcz residents, it had been their only and most important city church for centuries. Their Fara. The history of the Bydgoszcz Fara-Cathedral is most closely intertwined with the history of the city of Bydgoszcz.

It is true that there were earlier churches—St. Giles’ Church and the castle chapel, both of which no longer exist—but at the time they were built, Bydgoszcz was not yet a city. Every European city had to have its own church. Alongside monastery churches, castle churches, pilgrimage churches, and others, there had to be that one and only—the city church, the parish church. In Bydgoszcz, immediately after the city’s charter was granted—on April 19, 1346—construction began on the city church, located in the immediate vicinity of the market square and the town hall. This, too, was a principle and tradition of European medieval cities. A close encounter between the sacred and the profane.

The Bydgoszcz Parish Church (which much later became the Cathedral) was originally made of wood. However, the 15th and 16th centuries were a period of extraordinary development and economic prosperity for Bydgoszcz, as well as for many other Polish cities. In Bydgoszcz, this prosperity was based mainly on trade in grain, timber, and local handicrafts, including the famous Bydgoszcz beer, known even in Hanseatic Gdańsk. Therefore, out of gratitude and following the fires that destroyed the wooden church, it was decided to build a magnificent stone Gothic church.

Construction lasted from 1466 to 1502. That was a long time. However, it should be remembered that for people of the Middle Ages, erecting a church was not merely a matter of construction. It was also a symbolic “stone prayer” (in Bydgoszcz, a brick one). The process of building mattered more than the finished structure.

St. Nicholas and St. Martin were chosen as the parish’s patron saints, as they, being the protectors of trade and numerous crafts, best reflected the city’s economic aspirations. The brick Gothic exterior walls bear traces of many chapels, now no longer existing, that were founded by various guilds and brotherhoods. During recent renovation work, a polychrome Gothic ornamental frieze was discovered above the southern entrance. Inside, visitors are struck by an extraordinary richness of color—a feature not often seen in the regions of northern Poland. The polychromes are not very old; they date from 1922–25 and were created by Henryk Jackowski based on a design by Stefan Cybichowski. These rich paintings, in the decorative spirit of the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, are often associated by visitors to the Bydgoszcz Cathedral with the old churches of Kraków: the Matejko-style interior of St. Mary’s Church, the Franciscan church designed by Wyspiański and Mehoffer, or Wawel Cathedral itself. It is known that well-known residents of Bydgoszcz posed for the artist as saints and angels, including the first mayors of free interwar Bydgoszcz, merchants, distinguished activists, and their wives and daughters.

The interior has preserved a rich collection of mainly 18th-century Rococo furnishings. Some of the furnishings come from the now-defunct Carmelite church, including the very beautiful choir stalls in the presbytery—benches where monks from the other bank of the Brda River prayed for centuries (today, the site of the Carmelite monastery is occupied by a park and the Opera Nova parking lot). Additionally, the cathedral’s altars, the choir stalls, the pulpit, and the late-Renaissance brass baptismal font funded by Mayor Wojciech Łochowski in 1611, as well as the epitaphs, paintings, and numerous commemorative plaques.

However, the most important work of art in Bydgoszcz Cathedral—and at the same time the object of special religious veneration—is the Madonna with a Rose. The painting on the main altar is what most captures the attention of the faithful and tourists alike. It is a stunning late-Gothic painting of the Madonna and Child, in which she holds a tiny, barely bloomed rose in her other hand in an elegant, courtly gesture. A small rose garden, featuring various species of blooming roses and expanded mainly by newlyweds, was created for her along the southern wall of the presbytery. The Bydgoszcz Mother of God of Beautiful Love—as she is officially known—makes the Parish Church-Cathedral a popular Marian shrine. Interestingly, an almost identical image of the Madonna can be found in the famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. A faithful replica of the Bydgoszcz Madonna with the Rose was presented to Pope John Paul II during his visit to Bydgoszcz on June 7, 1999.

And here’s another, rather inconspicuous detail from the southern wall of the church. High up, on the gutter outlet, a small crowned eagle is embossed in the metal. It was there even during the occupation—the only one of its kind in Bydgoszcz. The Germans overlooked it. Young Poles, especially those wearing middle school caps, would come here secretly to pay homage to the national emblem.
