Bydgoszcz Opera Festival
The Bydgoszcz Opera Festival officially joined the musical calendar in April 1994. Initially, it was conceived as a creative way to help fund and finish the construction of the opera house, which had been dragging on for over 20 years. The very first festival actually took place on an active construction site: unplastered walls, audiences sitting on folding chairs, cables dangling from the ceiling, and dust everywhere.

Yet, the incredible atmosphere of that opening festival is something you won't find anywhere else. The locals knew they were witnessing the birth of something truly landmark in Polish culture. Today, the festival is a major independent event, and the Opera Nova building itself is one of the most modern and beautiful opera houses in Poland. Stunningly located right on the banks of the Brda River, it has become the city’s cultural showcase.
Opera and ballet companies from all over the world perform here—including the famous Swedish contemporary Cullberg Ballet, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, and renowned troupes from Cuba, Spain, and many other countries. It is no surprise, then, that the Bydgoszcz Opera Festival draws opera lovers from all over Poland. It’s also worth noting that opera thrives in Bydgoszcz all year round; our shows regularly boast some of the highest attendance rates in the country, often selling out completely.
The repertoire heavily features the grand classics that audiences love most, such as Verdi's La Traviata and Nabucco, or Puccini's Tosca. However, the opera house also stages rare masterpieces that are seldom performed elsewhere in Poland, such as Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele or Amilcare Ponchielli's La Gioconda. Clearly, the prominent Polish music critic Jerzy Waldorff had good reason to write that "Bydgoszcz is a true musical powerhouse."
In 2026, the festival took place from April 25th to May 10th.
