Knots: A Story of a City by the River
"Knots" (Węzły) is one of the three permanent exhibitions planned for Rother's Mills (Młyny Rothera). It is housed in the Grain Granary (Spichrz Zbożowy), located on the river side. This modern, multimedia, and interactive exhibition tells the story of the city by the river and its inhabitants, highlighting the vital role of water in people's lives. While referencing the Bydgoszcz Water Junction (Bydgoski Węzeł Wodny), the title also carries a symbolic meaning, reflecting human connections and the intertwined destinies of the city's residents.
About the Exhibition
Throughout the exhibition, photographs, engravings, texts, and films blend seamlessly with set designs that capture the atmosphere of historic Bydgoszcz. The display invites visitors to discover how the 19th-century city took shape. You will find out when the Argentine tango was danced in Bydgoszcz for the first time and catch a glimpse of what daily life looked like aboard a river barge. The "Knots" exhibition space also features symbols deeply cherished by locals, including the famous tugboat Konrad.
Beyond exploring the city's history, the exhibition addresses contemporary water-related challenges on both a local and global scale. Visitors can see how modern Bydgoszcz tackles the climate crisis and what actions are being taken to protect local flora and fauna.
The exhibition spans two floors of the Grain Granary. It begins on the ground floor with a presentation of Bydgoszcz's historical development and its numerous ties to the river. The upper floor continues the narrative, focusing on water as an invaluable natural resource.
