VOLVER – TO RETURN – an original flamenco performance

Volver – to return. To arrive at a place one once left or departed from. Returning is inextricably linked to the sense of the passage of time. We return to places, things, people, and events that were important to us. Every return is a personal journey—an attempt to reflect on what was and what is. It is an encounter with memory, a search for meaning, a sense of change, and a quest for seeds of permanence.

We return to our childhood, to our family home, to people and places. We return to interrupted activities, to pursuing passions once abandoned, to books we set aside. We return, rediscovering ourselves.

But the return also has a more universal dimension. It is part of the ever-turning wheel of history and one of the experiences that define the identity of the modern world. It is also the apotheosis of life—the point at which birth and death become one and the same return to the space from which we come.

Volver (To Return) is a personal story about returning to oneself and to genuine emotions. It is an attempt to return to a lost vision of the world, to one’s own values, to what remains truly important despite the passage of time.

Since art should engage in dialogue with contemporary reality, the performance also addresses the questions we ask ourselves today—as people witnessing the collapse of the existing world order.

What is worth returning to? What gives us hope? Do we, like Theseus in the labyrinth, need a thread to find our way back to the ball of thread—to our own “self,” guarded by the watchful eye of the Minotaur? And who will hand us that thread?

These questions form the canvas for a performance told in the most universal language—the language of movement, dance, and sound.

The starting point for the script was the copla “Volver,” a bolero featured in Pedro Almodóvar’s film of the same title.

On stage, flamenco and contemporary dance techniques will intertwine, creating a language of movement where tradition meets the modern. The musical score features Baroque-era pieces, original arrangements of flamenco music, and compositions by the young composer and guitarist Rainer Maria Nero.

Dorota Dzięcioł—dance, direction
Jacob de Carmen—flamenco vocals (Granada)
Rainer Maria Nero—flamenco guitar (musical arrangements) (Austria)
Sławomir Dolata—guitar (musical arrangements)
Monika Szala—violin
Dawid Cholewiński—cajón, percussion instruments

This project was made possible thanks to funding from a grant awarded by the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship.
