Sound Test 2026!

For the third time, we invite the residents of Bydgoszcz to join us in celebrating International Music Day—not as a one-day event, but as a month-long celebration of sound, rhythm, and artistic diversity. From September 15 to October 21, the entire city will be filled with music, including in clubs, cultural institutions, galleries, and outdoor venues.

san((orient – Lubertowicz / Mielcarek / Kikta

san((orient is a spontaneously formed trio rooted in the shared background and long-standing friendship—dating back to childhood—between Piotr Kikta and Wojtek Lubertowicz. They invited double bassist Jakub Mielcarek to join them.

The name is a joke referencing the famous duo sunn o))), which, as one well-known music journalist put it, has been successfully playing a single note for over forty years. However, san((orient plays more notes, and its source—both literally and figuratively—is the San River. It is, therefore, music drawn from the banks of the San and from distant lands to the east of it, seasoned with a generous dose of improvisation. Sentimental, yet quite wild, like the rush of a mountain river.

The trio consists of:

Wojciech Lubertowicz – sound engineer and multi-instrumentalist. A graduate of the Sound Engineering Department at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. He earned a Doctor of Arts degree from the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków, defending a dissertation on contemporary techniques for playing frame drums. He specializes in playing ethnic percussion instruments (frame drums, darbuka, tombak, cajón) and wind instruments (duduk, ney). He works at the intersection of musical styles and genres, collaborating with artists in early music (Il Giardino D’Amore, Sabionetta, Alta), folk (including Maria Pomianowska, Mosaik, Karolina Skrzyńska, Angela Gaber), traditional music (the Warsaw-Lublin Brass Band, Monodia Polska, the Bonanza Dance Orchestra), as well as jazz and alternative music (Zawartko/Piasecki, Phillip Bracken). He also collaborates with numerous theaters (including the National Theater, the Polish Classics Theater, the Arnold Szyfman Polish Theater in Warsaw, and the Juliusz Osterwa Theater in Lublin). He has dozens of album recordings to his credit (including the solo album *Brzask*) and has performed concerts on four continents.

Jakub Mielcarek—double bassist, pianist, composer, and arranger. A graduate of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, where he studied jazz double bass under Prof. Jacek Niedziela-Meira, Michał Barański, and Adam Kowalewski. He moves between diverse styles—from mainstream jazz to free jazz, world music, and traditional music. His awards include, among others: “Złote Gęśle” at Polish Radio’s “Nowa Tradycja” folk music competition, awarded to the best instrumentalist (2009); an individual distinction at the “Nowa Tradycja” Festival (2012), and a special award at the “Jazz nad Odrą” Festival (2016). He has participated in the recording of numerous albums, both his own—“I co dalej?” and “Zbliżam się k’Tobie”—and as a sideman. He has performed in concerts and participated in many artistic and musical events, such as festivals, competitions, and workshops both in Poland and abroad, including in France, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. He performs traditional music with, among others, the Niwiński Band, the Galicja Orchestra, and the Brody Band. He has collaborated with, among others: Jacek Mielcarek, Marek Kądziela, Rudi Mahalle, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Wojciech Konikiewicz, Kuba Stankiewicz, Jan Emil Młynarski, Piotr Zabrodzki, Krzysztof Szmańda, Tadeusz Sudnik, Maciej Fortuna, Maria Siwiec, Janusz Prusinowski, Adam Strug, Maciej Obara, Dominik Wania, and Piotr Damasiewicz.

Piotr Kikta—bookseller, cultural organizer, occasional clarinetist and bass guitarist, who sometimes performs on the improvised music scene. A graduate of the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. Expelled from the jazz program for being deemed unfit to play jazz, he nevertheless went on to play with quite renowned musicians after graduation. Member of the short-lived group Los Músculos.
